MAPOLY Lecturers Go On Strike Over Alleged Sack Of 250 Colleagues

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta chapter have suspended academic activities following the alleged sacking of 250 of members by the Technical Committee supervising upgrade of the institution to a university status. The Committee led by Prof. Peter Okebukola was said to have asked them in a directive to resign and re-apply as academic staff members of the new University named Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology (MAUTECH) by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The lecturers who stormed the institution early on  Wednesday  morning, shut the entrance ,   chanting  anti- Committee songs and some fetish objects in a calabash were also dropped at the entrance. The ASUP Chairman, Comrade Kola Abiola, who addressed the protesting lecturers, accused Okebukola of giving the directive in a meeting between members of the committee and the leadership of the union. Unilorin students warned against walking alone in the dark

The Management of the University of Ilorin Kwara state, has warned students of the institution, particularly females, against walking alone in dark alleys at night. This was made known on Thursday . Registrar of the University, Mr Dada Obafemi,   said the management had observed that many students were not careful enough about their personal security and safety rules while on the campus. Obafemi urged the students to identify the best routes between their hostels and classes, adding that they should take the safest route not necessarily the fastest one. He also appealed to the students to always notify their friends about their movements and report any suspicious person to the security unit of the university.

NDDC pledges support for Ozoro Polytechnic in Niger Delta region

  The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has restated its resolve to assist the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, with the provision of basic infrastructure, such as roads and hostel accommodation. The Managing Director, Mr Nsima Ekere, said this in a statement issued by Mr Ibitoye Abosede, the Director Corporate Affairs of  the Commission on Wednesday. Ekere, represented by the Executive Director Projects, Mr Samuel Adjogbe, said this when he received members of the Governing Council, led by the Chairman, Funkekeme Solomon at the NDDC Headquarters in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. According to Ebere,  the Commission is  making efforts to complete all on-gong projects in the institution He said that the Commission would also embark on new projects such as the construction of hostel accommodation and other infrastructure to enable students learn under a conducive atmosphere. JAMB to Open 2017 Direct Entry Application Portal On July 10th

Head of Public Relations,  Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB)  Dr. Fabian Benjamin.says the body  will begin the sale of the 2017 Direct Entry forms and registration of foreign candidates on July 10th. Speaking in an interview with newsmen on Monday in Abuja, Mr. Benjamin said the process of registration for the Direct Entry was spelt out in the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). He said candidates for Direct Entry were expected to have Advanced Level, Diploma or its equivalent, while foreign candidates must possess proof of residency abroad. He noted that measures had been put in place to ensure that candidates who wrote the previous examination and failed were not registered in foreign countries, unless they meet the guideline. Mr. Benjamin explained that the Direct Entry would be sold at the same price previously pegged at N5,000, adding that the Board was yet to fix the price for application for foreign candidate

NUC Dissociates Self From Alleged Nigerian University Ranking

The   National Universities Commission   (NUC) has dissociated itself from the purported ranking of Nigerian universities making rounds on the Internet. In a swift statement released by NUC, the commission said that the list did not emanate from the supervisory agency of the nation’s university system The statement read, “The attention of the NUC has been drawn to some purported lists, making the rounds on the internet, of the ‘Top 100’ and ‘Top 50’ universities in Nigeria, which were alleged to be the outcome of a non-existing ‘annual university rankings’ by the National University Commission. “It has to be stated, unequivocally, that the lists did not emanate from the NUC. The Commission therefore totally dissociates itself from them.” The NUC restated that its mandate includes approval of courses and programmes; determination and maintenance of Minimum Academic Standards; monitoring of universities; accreditation of academic programmes and institutions; as well
