NANS PROTESTS SUSPENSION OF STUDENT UNIONS IN OYO BASED INSTITUTIONS    Students in higher institutions around Oyo State have demanded the reinstatement of student unions suspended in most of the institutions. They made the demand during what they described as a Democracy Day walk to the Oyo State Government House in Ibadan. The specifically mentioned the University of Ibadan and the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) as some of such institutions. Speaking to journalists, the Chairman, National Association of Nigeria Students, Oyo State Chapter, OLUJUWON MARSHAL, said they were also demanding adequate funding of education in the state.

Students of the Plateau State University on Monday took to the streets in protest over an attack on their institution by armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen. Our correspondent gathered on Monday that one student was shot while another female student was allegedly raped by the gunmen who invaded the female hostel on Sunday night. It was also learnt that some offices belonging to lecturers were also burgled by the hoodlums and many items carted away. The students, who were angered by the development blocked the major road leading to the institution located at Bokkos Local Government Area and called on government and school management to put an end to the incessant attacks and harassment of students by herdsmen. The Academic Staff Union of Universities is planning a code of conduct for its members that will participate in subsequent elections in Nigeria, the union’s President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, has stated. He said the code will guide its members participation in the November 16 governorship elections in Bayelsa and Kogi states and the 2023 general elections. “Before such subsequent elections happen, we must be clear with the rules of engagement with INEC. I am saying that for now, we have not obtained the clearance from our National Executive Council that ASUU can participate. But if it happens that our NEC approves our participation in those (subsequent) elections, the conditions will be well spelt out.  “We will have to give INEC some conditions, it is when we agree on the rules of engagement that we can come back to package and reengineer our code of conduct for our members who will be participating in these elections at our behest,” the ASUU President said.

The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) has expressed dissatisfaction with late payment of tuition by students. It made this known during an interactive session between the university management and students’ leaders at the school auditorium. In a document, the management  stated that as at Monday, April 29,  of the 25,513 students of the university, only 7,382 had paid. The document further stated that while 10,145 students generated invoice, but were yet to pay, 7,986 students  had neither paid nor generated invoice. Of this, students of Sokoto and Kebbi states, who are being sponsored by their governments, have the highest figure. A total of 322 and 210 students from Sokoto and Kebbi states have paid. But 3,835 and 2,066 from Sokoto and Kebbi who have generated invoice are yet to pay. Also, 4,133 and 1,573 students from Sokoto and Kebbi are yet to either generate or pay their tuition.

A 25-year-old man, Kazeem Jinadu, has appeared before an Abeokuta Magistrate Court sitting  in Isabo for stealing phones of students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) during examination. Jinadu, a resident of Orile-Iganmu, Lagos, is facing a five-count charge of stealing, conspiracy and fraudulent conversion, among others. The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecutor Sgt. Adejoke Adebari told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Sunday, March 3 at MAPOLY premises in Ojere, Abeokuta. The Magistrate Mrs Sam Obaleye granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties. Mrs Obaleye said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must show evidence of tax payment to the state government. The case was adjourned for continuation of trial.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Friday, arraigned a lecturer at Nasarawa State University, Keffi for alleged diversion of funds The suspect, Moses Adoga was arraigned at Nasarawa State High Court, sitting in Lafia, the capital city of Nasarawa State. According to the statement issued by the spokesperson of EFCC, Makurdi Zonal Office, Mrs Okeanu Nnwanyinma, the suspect was said to have obtained a Tertiary Education Trust Funds to the tune of N19m for his PhD programme in Cellular and Molecular Biology at Bangor University, United Kingdom but diverted the fund to personal use. Parts of the statement read, “A count charge, that you Moses Peter Adoga sometime in 2011 in Keffi within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court being entrusted with the sum of N19,765,200 (Nineteen Million Seven Hundred and Sixty Five Thousand Two Hundred Naira) from Tertiary Education Trust Fund paid into your United Bank for Africa account through Nassarawa State University Di...

The Vice-Chancellor of Kwara State University, Prof.AbdulrasheedNa’allah has disclosed that the Aeronautic Engineering Department of the institution has won a N21m grant to design a drone to tackle petroleum pipeline vandalism across the country. Na’allah said this on Monday at Malete in Kwara State during a briefing ahead of the seventh convocation of the university slated for Saturday, June 8. He also said the university, which had pioneered courses like Aeronautic Engineering and Advanced Military Studies in the country, had also won money from the British government to design some incubators. Na’allah further disclosed that 1,196 students would graduate, out of which 25 would be First Class degree holders.  He also said 151 students would bag Master’s degrees while five would go home with Doctor of Philosophy certificates.

The Federal University of Technology, Akure, has been adjudged the best university in South-West Nigeria, while its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Fuwape, emerged the best VC in the zone at the second edition of the South West Education Award and Lecture held at the Redeemer’s University in Ede, Osun State on Tuesday.
